Structure and Dynamics of Macromolecules

Ing. Jiří Brus, Dr.

The Structure and Dynamics of Macromolecules (STRUCTURE) center comprises teams dealing with various approaches to the analysis of polymer structure and the development of methodology for structural studies, using physical methods including NMR spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy as well as X-ray powder diffraction and small angle X-ray scattering.

In addition to the original research topics, the methodological capacity and expertise that STRUCTURE provides are essential for most of the other teams in the Institute.

The strength of the Centre is in its focus on finding general and fundamental relations between the structures of macromolecular systems and their properties.

The Centre operates modern advanced spectrometers and other scientific instruments which, together with instruments available through international cooperation (synchrotron X-ray), effectively cover all fields of the current structure analysis of polymers.

Research of our center nearly completely covers all trends in current material science and also allows us to fulfil the needs of other centers of the IMC. The research of the STRUCTURE center also follows the strategy of the Czech Academy of Sciences called Strategy AV21, which is based on the multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional cooperation. The center STRUCTURE and the integrated Joint Laboratory of Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy represent the core of Research Program “VP10-Molecules and Materials for Life”. This Research Program (“VP10”), which is globally coordinated by Dr. Jiří Brus, the head of the STRUCTURE centre, links up four institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IMC, JHIPC, IOCB and IIC).
