Topic Tissue-equivalent detector of cosmic radiation based on hydrogel
Supervisor Jiří Pánek, PhD
Consultant Dr Jiří Pfleger
Department Supramolecular Polymer Systems
Description The aim of the project is the research of an advanced technology of hybrid dosimetric system. The student will contribute to the development of tissue-equivalent radiation monitoring system intended for personal dosimetry aboard spaceships, including extravehicular activities. Tissue-equivalent hydrogel will be synthesized by free radical polymerization of mixture of methacrylate and methacrylamide monomers and crosslinkers in water-miscible nontoxic, nonvolatile organic solvent milieu. Overall elemental composition will be very similar as average of soft tissues. Homogeneous distribution of suitable scintillation probes within the hydrogel volume will be optimized. Subsequently, a hydrogel scintillator-photodetector device will be designed with focus on two possible arrangements: hydrogel – silicon photodiode array, and hydrogel – semiconductor. The topic will be investigated in collaboration with an industrial partner.
