The development of functional materials with precisely controlled architectures and adaptive properties offers new opportunities to address challenges in biomedicine and environmental science. My research focuses on establishing molecular design and synthetic strategies to create polyfunctional materials with tailored interfacial properties and controlled interactions with their surroundings. Building on the integration of branched polymers into nanomaterials, we have progressively shifted towards the bottom-up design and synthesis of functional platforms directly from suitable monomers, rather than relying solely on the post-functionalization of conventional nanomaterials. This approach enables the construction of advanced materials with well-defined structures at the molecular and atomic scales, offering new possibilities for controlling their organization, functionality, and performance. Examples spanning two-dimensional polymers, porous frameworks, supramolecular systems, and dynamic polymer networks illustrate the potential of these strategies for biomedical applications, environmental sensing, contaminant removal, and sustainable materials development.
