Polypyrrole has attracted much attention due to its attractive physicochemical characteristics, combining high conductivity with chemical and environmental stability, ease of preparation, and cost-effectiveness. The synthesis of PPy in the presence of various additives can overcome its limited processability, enhancing its mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. In this work, PPy aerogels were prepared through oxidative polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of various additives, such as water-soluble organic polymers, nanofibrillated cellulose, tannic acid, and bacterial cellulose. The effect of different additives on morphology and conductivity of the aerogels was studied. Moreover, the prepared aerogels were utilized for the removal of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions and their maximum adsorption capacity were estimated.
