Polyelectrolytes: A Versatile Class Of Polymers

Prof. Dr. Matthias Ballauff
Lecture of Institute guest
16.5.2023 10:00, Lecture room A

If charges are appended to linear or crosslinked polymers, a polyelectrolyte results. These polyelectrolytes are ubiquitous and play a major role in biophysics. Important natural polyelectrolytes as e.g. DNA or Heparin are central in biology and a thorough understanding of these systems and of charge-charge interaction is one of the main tasks of biophysics. In my lecture I will highlight these systems and our recent research done on: linear polyelectrolytes and their interaction with counterions, spherical polyelectrolyte brushes and their use carriers for nanoparticles, interaction of linear polyelectrolytes with proteins, charged polymer networks and their interaction with proteins, role of polyelectrolytes in virus infection.
