Department of Chemistry and Physics of Surfaces and Biointerfaces

Research People Equipment Publications

The department of Chemistry and Physics of Surfaces and Biointerfaces focuses on the development of novel concepts for the preparation of synthetic smart bioresponsive polymer surfaces, with defined physico-chemical properties and known state of bioactive distal end-groups. The emerging polymer chemistry, surface engineering and biofunctionalization concepts developed by the department thrive to outperform the contemporary polymer surfaces used as biomaterials, scaffolds, sensors and micro array assays, etc. The research team is composed of scientists and students with multidisciplinary background, comprising organic, physical and analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, biophysics, biochemistry and biotechnology. The interdisciplinary projects are formulated to fully address the chemistry and physics of different surfaces and biointerfaces, as well as to explain and control the complex interactions between the surfaces of different materials (used in various applications, such as microelectronics, marine fouling applications, biomedical and bio-technological devices, and tissue engineering applications) and the environment to which these surfaces are exposed to.
