G E N E R A L   I N F O R M A T I O N

REGISTRATION

On-site registration of participants takes place on Sunday, 20 July, from 14:00 to 21:00 in the Komenský hall of residence, Praha 6, Parléřova 6; the registration continues in the Institute
of Macromolecular Chemistry (room C) the next day. The Conference Office will operate on
21-24 July (Monday through Thursday) from 08:30 to 12:30 and from 13:30 to 16:30.

All participants should register. Only persons wearing name badges are entitled to enter the lecture room.

No exchange counter operates in the Komenský hall of residence or in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. Information about the nearest exchange offices is available at the Registration Desk.

Registration fees

On-site cash payment of the registration fee is considered as payment after 15 April. The P.M.M. Secretariat is not authorized to accept credit cards or personal cheques.

The registration fee does not include provision for any kind of insurance. Neither the organizing institutions nor the Organizing Committee assume responsibility or liability for personal accident and loss or damage to belonging however caused.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation for most participants has been reserved in the Komenský hall of residence, Praha 6, Parléřova 6. Some participants stay in the Academy residence, Praha 6, Na Marně 9. On-site cash payment of the booked accommodation is to be made at the Registration Desk.

Breakfast is served in the cafeteria of the Komenský hall of residence and in the Academy residence (for participants staying here) from 07:00 to 08:00. Breakfast is included in the accommodation cost.

Participants must leave the rooms on the day of their departure by 12:00.

TRANSPORT

Public transport

Within the city, there is an integrated transport system (underground Metro, trams, and buses) which operates without conductors. Tickets must be purchased in advance and stamped inside the tram or bus or before passing the gates of the Metro. Tickets for Kč 6 for a single 15-minute journey by tram or bus, or 4-stop journey by Metro  -  as well as transfer tickets for Kč 10 for a 60-minute journey by all means of transport are on sale at newspaper stands and tobacco shops, at hotel reception desks, in restaurants, at railway stations, at the airport, etc. The Metro runs from 5 a.m. till midnight.

How to reach the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry

From the Komenský hall of residence, go downhill to the tram stop "Hládkov" and take tram No 8 (direction to LEHOVEC). Get off the next stop ("Vozovna Střešovice") and change to tram No 1, 2, or 18 (in the opposite direction - to PETŘINY) as far as the terminus PETŘINY.

From the Academy residence, take tram No 25 (direction to STŘELNIČNÁ), get off at Hradčanská (2 stops), and change to tram No 1 or 18 (in the opposite direction - to PETŘINY) as far as the terminus PETŘINY.

From the city centre, take the Metro green line A as far as "Hradčanská" station. From there, take tram No 1 or 18 (direction to PETŘINY) as far as the terminus PETŘINY.

How to reach the Komenský hall of residence

From the Institute, take tram No 1, 2, or 18 and get off at "Vozovna Střešovice" (7 stops), change to tram No 8 (in the opposite direction - to BÍLÁ HORA), get off the next stop ("Hládkov"), and go forward as far as the Parléřova sSreet.

From the city centre, take the Metro green line A as far as "Hradčanská" station. From there, take tram No 8 (direction to BÍLÁ HORA), get off at "Hládkov" (3  stops), and go forward as far as the Parléřova Street. You may also take tram No 18 in the city centre, get off at "Hradčanská", and proceed as above.

How to reach the Academy residence

From the Institute, take tram No 2, get off at Vítězné náměstí (9 stops), change to tram No 25 (direction to PODBABA), gett off the next stop (Lotyšská), take the first turning to the right, and go forward as far as the Na Marně Street.

From the city centre, take the Metro green line A as far as Dejvická station. From there, take tram No 25 (direction to PODBABA), get off at Lotyšská (1 stop), and proceed as above.

Taxi

The taxi fare is Kč 15-25 per kilometre within the city boundaries. The special taxi fare from the Komenský hall of residence or the Institute to the airport is Kč 400-500 (from downtown
Kč 500-600).

Special transport

Special buses will only bring the participants from the Academy residence to the Institute every morning. The departure times are given on the notice board at the Registration Desk.

Air and railway transport

Prague has direct air links with most capitals in Europe and with many countries overseas. The international airport Praha is situated about 20 km (12 miles) from the city centre. Buses operated by the Czech Airlines (České aerolinie, ČSA) run in 20-30 min intervals from the city terminal ("Vltava", Praha 1, V celnici, near the Metro station "Náměstí Republiky" yellow line B) to the airport; airport-bus fare Kč 85.

International trains leave Prague from the following railway stations: Praha - hlavní nádraží (Main Station; also a Metro station of the red line C), Praha - Holešovice (also a Metro station of the red line C), and Praha - Smíchov (also a Metro station of the yellow line B).

LUNCHES AND REFRESHMENTS

Lunches (included in the registration fee) will be available for active participants and registered accompanying persons from 12:30 to 13:30 in the refectory of the halls of residence "Větrník", which can be reached by bus No 179 or 191 (one stop), tram No 1 or 18 (two stops), or walk (about 10 min) from the Institute. Admission by tickets only.

Coffee, tea, and soft drinks (included in the registration fee) are served during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks. Refreshments are on sale in the canteen of the Institute.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Welcome reception

Sunday, 20 July, 19:00-21:00. An informal get-together party with cold dishes in the Komenský hall of residence. (Complimentary for all registered participants.)

Excursion with informal dinner

Wednesday, 23 July, 14:00-23:00. Visit to the royal castle Orlík built in the 14th century and towering now over the dam spanning the Vltava River (dam height 91 m, lake depth 74 m, water content 720 million cubic metres): seeing rich collections of arms and hunting trophies. The excursion continues with a boat trip to the confluence of the rivers Vltava and Otava to one of the most important Czech royal castles Zvíkov, founded by king Přemysl Otakar I (1192-1228) on the site of a Celtic oppidium and then held by various aristocratic families (houses of Rožmberk, Švamberk, Eggenberg, Schwarzenberg).

The informal dinner will take place in the Zvíkov brewery restaurant, after seeing the brewery including gustation of beer.

The buses depart from the Institute and return to the Academy residence and the Komenský hall of residence. Admission by tickets only.

Price: CHF 90.

Farewell toast

Thursday, 24 July. A stirrup-cup and canapés after the closing ceremony in the Institute. (Complimentary for all participants.)

A C C O M P A N Y I N G  P E R S O N S'  P R O G R A M M E

Admission for those who paid the accompanying person's fee. The fee includes four lunches (admission by tickets Accompanying Persons Programme) the three of which (on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) are available from 12:30 to 13:30 in the refectory of the halls of residence Větrník (see p. 9). Only persons wearing the Meeting name badges (including children) are entitled to enter the bus.

Monday, 21 July

14:00-17:00 - Introductory sightseeing in Prague.

The bus departs from the Institute and returns to the Academy residence and the Komenský hall of residence.

Tuesday, 22 July

09:00-17:00 - A visit to Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad, about 130 km north-west of Prague), situated in a deep valley of the Teplá River and surrounded by large forests. Karlovy Vary was originally a fortress founded by Charles IV in the 14th century, later a world-famous spa, the largest in the Czech Republic (treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and metabolic diseases, mineral waters from twelve thermal springs, temperatures up to 73 Centigrade). The spa was visited by many personages such as Beethoven, Goethe, German emperors, and Russian tsars. Karlovy Vary is also renowned through the Moser glass, Bohemian porcelain, and the Becherovka herb liqueur (sometimes called "the thirteenth spring"): Sightseeing the spa, walk in the colonnades, visit to the biggest hot spring (2000 litres per minute, shooting up to 12 m height), tasting mineral waters, visit to the museum of porcelain.

The bus departs from the Institute and returns to the Academy residence and the Komenský hall of residence.

Wednesday, 23 July

09:00-12:30 - Guided visit to the Prague Castle (Hradčany) and to the Charles Bridge (Karlův most) dating back to the Middle Ages, often called "the gallery of statues in the open air".

The bus departs from the Institute . After walking-seeing the Castle area and walk to the Bridge, return to the halls of residence "Větrník" by bus.

Thursday, 24 July

09:00-12:30 - Guided sightseeing, featuring a walk through the Old Town of Prague and a visit to the former Jewish Ghetto of Prague.

The bus departs from the Institute and returns to the halls of residence "Větrník".

PROGRAMME

SESSIONS

All sessions will be held in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Praha 6 - Petřiny, Heyrovského náměstí 2.

LANGUAGE

English is the working language of the Conference. No translation will be provided.

PRESENTATION OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Main lectures

The presentation time for each lecture is 40 minutes, additional 10 minutes is reserved for discussion.

Special lectures

The presentation time for each special lecture is 20 minutes, additional 5 minutes is reserved for discussion.

Poster communications

Two poster sessions will take place on Monday (in the afternoon) and Wednesday (in the morning). Posters should be mounted the half-day preceding the corresponding poster session in order to be freely accessible to the participants for preliminary inspection. The posters should be removed immediately after the session.

PRESENTATION FACILITIES

Projection of 5x5 cm slides, overhead projection, and blackboard are available for lectures and discussions. Slide projector does not function with slides thicker than 2.5 mm. The speakers are requested to bring their slides to the operator during the break before the session of their scheduled presentation.

Both main lectures and special lectures will be published in a special volume of Macromolecular Symposia.
