Polystyrene-block-poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) block copolymers with various content of acrylonitrile were synthesized by nitroxide - mediated radical polymerization and post-functionalized using efficient "click" chemistry process.

The morphological behaviour of parent and modified, i.e. block copolymers containing 5-vinyltetrazole units, cast from tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The observed morphology was generally lamellar with a characteristic interlamellar distance in the range 60-70 nm.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to examine thin films spin-coated from dilute THF and dioxane solutions. Generally, films prepared from THF showed tendency to hole formations while films spin-coated from dioxane displayed lamellar or worm-like morphology.
