| Topic | 3D structure studies of natural killer cell receptors. |
| Annotation | Mammalian immune system relies on a number of receptors recognizing virus infected or cancer cells. A special type of lymphocytes recognizes such cells via a row of surface receptors and upon positive identification of an enemy a cascade of events leading to lysis of the contacted cell is initiated. These natural killer cells can avoid cells of their own organism but attack effectively for instance virus-infected cells. The molecular mechanism of this recognition has not been fully understood yet. We elucidate structure and function of these surface receptors mostly by means of X-ray diffraction analysis. The work includes protein purification, characterisation, and crystallization, diffraction screening, data collection at synchrotron radiation sources, structure solution and interpretation. |
