| Topic | Multi-centred hydrogen bonds in cellulose |
| Annotation | Cellulose is a linear polyglucan that is produced by plant cell wall and also by some algae, bacteria and marine animals. Supramolecular structure of cellulose is stabilized by a hydrogen bond network. The aim of the work is to contribute to the clarification of the formation mechanism of the multi-centred hydrogen bonds in cellulose and their role in stability and insolubility of cellulose. Thorough knowledge of the structure of cellulose is important for its applications in the design of new materials with highly optimised mechanical properties. Main methods will be Raman and infrared spectroscopy in combination with molecular modeling (quantum chemical calculations). Dependent on the student’s specialization the work can be oriented either experimentally or more theoretically. |
