TopicSingle electron transfer living radical polymerization of hydrophilic monomers in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems
AnnotationControl of the interactions at the interface of artificial materials and biological media is of central importance for the advancement of biomaterial science and biosensing. The first step to gain control over this interactions is to fully prevent the non-specific adsorption of proteins from biological media. This has only been possible utilizing antifouling polymer brushes grown by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). However, this polymerization is not control preventing the possibility to synthesize polymers with well define molecular weight, precise architectures and ultimately preventing the preparation of hierarchical brushes with combined properties. A new type of polymerization, single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SE-LRP) was recently introduced being much more robust than ATRP and requiring no purification steps. Thesis will be focused on study of the (co)polymerization and kinetics of novel antifouling polymers via SET-LRP in solution and the grafting from and onto surfaces. The student will become familiar with control polymerization, gel permeation chromatography, various spectroscopies and surface characterization such as ellipsometry, FTIR, contact angle and surface plasmon resonance.
