Welcome to the website of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (IMC).
The IMC is an academic institution focused on macromolecular (polymer) science. Its research aims at the synthesis of polymers and new polymer materials, polymer physics, and the physical chemistry of polymers.
The uniqueness of the IMC stems from the combined experience of the IMC scientists together with the concentration of a wide range of branches of polymer science in one place.
The main research covers synthetic polymers, their properties, and possible utilization based on a wide variability of polymer structures. Among all of the outstanding IMC researchers we must name Professor Otto Wichterle, the inventor of soft hydrogel contact lenses and the founder of the IMC in 1959.
Natural macromolecules - proteins, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids - are the matrix of life. Synthetic polymers – tooth brushes, credit cards, replacement joints for the human body, etc., are indispensable materials in our advanced civilisation.
To keep pace with technological developments, the IMC has invented a new Centre of Polymer Materials and Technologies. The project is supported by European Union funds: Prague-Competitiveness.
