AnotaceThe ability to tailor the properties of surfaces in the nanometric scale has enabled to access to a myriad of new material for high end applications such as in medicine or electronics. In particular polymer brushes haven been proven to be highly versatile systems for the engineering of various surface. While conventional grafting from techniques restrict the layer thickness to few nanometer and poor grafting densities reversible deactivation radical polymerizations allow to obtain polymers of different architectures and precise properties. This combined with click reactions extended the ability to prepared hierarchically structured functional brushes. Recently new polymerization protocols for polymer brushes induced by light have been introduced. Light-triggered atom transfer radical polymerization or single electron transfer radical polymerization enables the spatio- and temporal- control of the polymerizations resulting in an excellent tool for patterning surface. The goal of this project is the development of new photo-induced polymerizations of functional polymer brushes. These polymerizations will be optimized and new surface architectures will demonstrated in various substrates. Photo-triggered reactions will be exploited to access to efficient patterning of surfaces with biomolecules of interest. The prepared surfaces will target applications such as biosensing platforms, blood contacting devices as well for cell seeding. The student will also be involved –actively or in collaborative efforts- with the physico-chemical characterization of the surfaces by (ellipsometry, AFM, FTIR-IRRAS, FTIR-GAATR, XPS, ToF-SIMS, contact angle, QCM-d, SPR).
